I love piano and I love people - I want my students to love learning piano, enjoy their lessons and leave my music room feeling better than they did when they came in!

I offer piano lessons here in my home in Killinchy and also two days per week in Campbell College, Belfast (just for CCB students). I teach beginners to diploma students, typically no younger than six years old right up to… well, I think 72 years old might be the oldest student I’ve taught! Typically, we have half-hour lessons but when student get up to the higher grades, 45-minute or 60-minute lessons can be useful.

As part of preparing students for piano exams (typically ABRSM for Grades 1-5, Trinity for Grade 6+), I teach sight reading and aurals but I also do one-off aural lessons for student of other instrument, e.g. for singers or violinists preparing for exams. If you need an accompanist for a singing or instrumental exam or performance, give me a shout as I have 25 years’ experience accompanying at all levels from initial right up to advanced diplomas. I love teaching theory too, although it gets tricky to fit it into a half-hour lesson!

Piano Bio

Throughout school, I always loved music and languages. I was in every choir, orchestra and ensemble I possibly could, and yet, I was intending to become a linguist. A last-minute reconsideration resulted in my reading music at the University of Durham and I have never regretted that decision!

A degree and a performance diploma later, I decided to train as a teacher so I could pass on my love of music to another generation. During my eight years as a classroom music teacher, I discovered I loved the extra-curricular music-making and accompanying more than classroom work. And so, I developed a private teaching practice alongside classroom teaching until I was in a position to go totally freelance. Another decision without regret!

I continued my professional development with a postgraduate diploma in Music Teaching in Professional Practice (PGDipMtpp) from the University of Reading and I now enjoy a popular and successful piano teaching practice. Alongside teaching, I have acquired much experience as an accompanist for soloists of all levels, ranging from beginners right up to advanced diploma. I have enjoyed many years as an official accompanist with local music festivals including Ballymena, Coleraine and Portstewart. It’s a joy to support music-making at each and every level.
